Hockey at Notre Dame
Athol Murray College of Notre Dame has established itself internationally as a forerunner in the development of the whole athlete – on and off the ice. Through a balanced approach, Notre Dame has produced NHL, semi-pro, European, Olympic, NCAA and Canadian college hockey players at a disproportionately high rate. Currently 20 Hound alumni are NHLers, including Brad Richards, Vincent Lecavalier, Braydon Coburn, Jaden Schwartz, Rene Bourque, Willy Mitchell, Jordan Eberle, Sean Couturier, Tyler Myers, Teddy Purcell, and Keith Aulie, while Trotz, Patrick & Brind’Amour are now coaches.
Over the years, Notre Dame has won provincial and league championships at all minor hockey, Junior ‘A’ and female levels, with many graduates earning valuable scholarships to institutions in Canada and the US. Notre Dame Hounds have earned over $1.7 million in academic & athletic scholarships in 2010 & 2011 combined.
The Midget AAA Male Hounds won back to back National Telus Cup Champships in 2009 & 2010.
In the 2010-2011 season the Midget AAA Female Hounds won the Canadian National Championship Esso Cup. Notre Dame female hockey players are regularly scouted by Team Canada, NCAA and Canadian college reps. ND has female hockey teams competing in the JWHL, Midget AAA & Midget AA leagues.
All coaches at Notre Dame are educators who have played and excelled in the sport themselves. Notre Dame teams play on their own Olympic-sized indoor ice surface and travel to tournaments across North America.
Men’s Hockey Program
The Notre Dame’s Men’s Hockey program is one of the most presitgious programs in Canada. Notre Dame’s hockey teams play at all levels in Bantam, Midget and Junior A age categories. At the Midget level there may be occassions where more than one team plays in the same league. All team participants must be full time students at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame. Notre Dame is registered with the Saskatchewan Hockey Association and with Hockey Canada.
Notre Dame has 9 men’s hockey teams:
- 2 Bantam
- 6 Midget
- 1 Junior A
Bantam players are 14 years and younger, Midget Players are 17 years and younger, while Junior A is for players aged 20 years and younger. All ages are as of December 31st of the current season. Players are on the ice four to six times per week including practices and games. Notre Dame’s Olympic sized ice surface is the only one in the province of Saskatchewan.
To select our men’s teams, our coaching staff will use a combination of practices, fitness components, scrimmages, and exhibition games to select their teams prior to October 1st.
Women’s Hockey Program
Women’s hockey is a growing sport in North America and Notre Dame is on the leading edge of its development. Our teams have produced over 100 NCAA & CIS female athletes who have received athletic scholarships.
Over the course of the last 10 years female hockey players at Notre Dame have been awarded in excess of $5 million in athletic/academic scholarships.
Notre Dame has 3 female hockey teams:
- AAA Midget
To select our female teams our coaching staff will use a combination of resources throughout the year to commit players to the JWHL team prior to the start of the year. For all other teams a combination of practices, fitness components, scrimmages, and exhibition games will be used to select their teams prior to October 1st.
During the 2010-2011 season the Midget AAA Hounds won the National Female Midget Championship.
